Genistein (4',5,7-Trihydroxyisoflavone) is an isoflavone phytoestrogen that occurs naturally. Unlike pure soy isoflavone extracts that have a mix of glucoside forms, this product only has the aglycone form. This is the biologically active structure that binds directly to oestrogen receptors without needing to be changed by enzymes in the gut.

It has the same chemical structure as 17β-estradiol, which means it binds very well to Oestrogen Receptor Beta (ER-β). It is a Selective Oestrogen Receptor Modulator (SERM) and a strong tyrosine kinase (PTK) inhibitor because of this.
